Simba defender Nathaniel Chilambo says his call-up to the Taifa Stars squad is a great honour and an opportunity to continue establishing himself in the national team, while promising to give his all in the upcoming international matches.
Chilambo, who has been in good form since joining Simba from Azam FC, has been called up by head coach Miguel Gamondi for the Stars’ matches against Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar.
The defender said Tanzania’s preparations for AFCON 2027 make every match important, stressing that players should not approach the games simply as fixtures to be fulfilled.
He emphasised that the matches provide the Stars with an opportunity to assess themselves, seek positive results and help Gamondi identify areas that need improvement ahead of the finals, which are expected to be held in East Africa.
“We should not play just for the sake of it. In every match, we need to go out there looking for results and assess where we stand ahead of the major tournament coming up,” said Chilambo.
Chilambo added that the matches will also help the players understand the new coach’s philosophy better and build greater understanding within the squad, which he considers important in preparation for major competitions.
The defender said he was delighted to receive the Taifa Stars call-up because representing one’s country is every player’s dream, while recognising that he earned the opportunity through his performances at club level.
“Being called up to Taifa Stars is a great joy and honour. It is every player’s dream to get the opportunity to represent their country. I will continue working hard to make the most of this opportunity,” he said.
Chilambo has been part of Simba’s strong start to the season, and his performances caught the attention of Gamondi, who has now handed him an opportunity with the Taifa Stars.
The matches are part of long-term preparations for AFCON 2027, with Tanzania co-hosting the finals and already guaranteed a place in the tournament.
