Kibadeni’s Unbroken Kariakoo Derby Hat-Trick Record

Simba fans, mark your calendars! On October 10, 2026, Uhuru Stadium, popularly known as ‘Shamba la Bibi’, will turn into a football battleground when Simba and Yanga meet in the NBC Premier League Kariakoo Derby.

The upcoming fixture, which will have a new dimension with the introduction of FVS technology and numbered seating, is scheduled to kick off at exactly 7:00pm, with Simba serving as the home side.

But before the ball is kicked and the current generation begins writing another chapter in history, there is one name that still holds a golden place in the history of the Kariakoo Derby.

That name is Simba legend Abdallah “King” Kibadeni.

Years have passed, generations have changed, and new players have come and gone, but the record set by Mzee Kibadeni in one of the biggest derbies ever witnessed in Tanzania remains untouched.

Kibadeni and a Historic Night

It was 1977.

Kariakoo was buzzing as Simba and Yanga met in a clash that would go on to leave a lasting mark on the history of Tanzanian football.

But that was no ordinary day.

It was the day the Mnyama roared with full force, leaving their traditional rivals without an answer.

Simba stormed to a 6-0 victory, a result that remains regarded as one of the heaviest defeats in the history of the Kariakoo Derby.

And in the middle of that goal-scoring celebration, one man stood out above the rest.

Abdallah “King” Kibadeni.

The legendary forward scored three goals in the match, creating a record that remains unbroken as the only hat-trick scored by a player in a Kariakoo Derby.

Kibadeni scored three times, while Jumanne Masimenti added two goals and Selemani Sanga scored an own goal, completing the 6-0 scoreline in Simba’s favour.

That is why whenever a Kariakoo Derby approaches, Kibadeni’s name inevitably comes back into the conversation.

Not simply because he was part of Simba’s golden generation, but because he left behind a mark that remains untouched to this day.

Years Pass, the Record Remains

In football, records are made to be broken.

But some records survive for so long that they become part of the culture and identity of the game itself.

Kibadeni’s hat-trick is one of those records.

The Kariakoo Derby has passed through many generations. It has produced heroes of different kinds, prolific goalscorers who have shaken the net and results that have kept fans on both sides talking for years.

Yet to this day, no one has managed to replicate what Kibadeni accomplished in 1977 — scoring three goals in a single match in this historic derby.

That is why his name still carries immense weight whenever Simba and Yanga meet.

From Kibadeni to the Okwi Generation

If the 6-0 victory of 1977 represents part of the golden chapter in Simba’s history, a later generation also wrote its own page.

In 2012, Simba faced Yanga with a squad featuring stars such as Emmanuel Okwi and Patrick Mafisango, and after 90 minutes the scoreboard read Simba 5-0 Yanga.

It was one of those days that lived long in the memories of Simba fans, as Okwi and his teammates turned the Kariakoo Derby into a stage on which to showcase their quality.

The years changed and the players changed, but the message remained the same: in a derby, history can be written in 90 minutes.

Another Statement in 2020

In 2020, Simba wrote another chapter in their history of clashes with Yanga.

In the semi-finals of the Azam Sports Federation Cup (ASFC), Simba secured a 4-1 victory in a match that brought the two rivals together under immense pressure.

Goals from Clatous Chama, Mzamiru Yassin, Gerson Fraga and Luis Miquissone gave Simba the victory and a place in the final.

That win added another memorable entry to the list of results Simba fans love to recall whenever the Derby approaches.

October 10: A New Chapter Awaits

Now all eyes are on October 10, 2026.

Simba head into the match as the home side, with high team morale following their strong start to the season and their desire to continue competing strongly against their traditional rivals.

But amid all the noise surrounding the present, history remains history.

And within that history, Mzee Abdallah “King” Kibadeni still holds a unique place.

Forty-nine years have passed since he scored his hat-trick in the 6-0 victory, but no other player has managed to repeat that feat in the Kariakoo Derby.

That remains the golden crown he has held to this day.
