Egyptian giants Pyramids FC and Al Ahly SC have been eliminated from the CAF Champions League following defeats in their quarter-final second-leg matches played on Saturday.
Pyramids FC lost 2-1 at home to AS FAR, a result that saw them eliminated 3-2 on aggregate. The Moroccan side displayed high quality and discipline, making the most of their early chances in the match.
In another match played in Cairo, Al Ahly SC suffered a 3-2 defeat against Espérance de Tunis. The victory secured the Tunisian side’s progression with a 4-2 aggregate win.
These results have been described as a major blow to Egyptian football, with both teams having strong histories in the competition. Al Ahly SC remains the most successful club in the tournament’s history, while Pyramids FC were among the favorites to perform well this season.
On the other hand, the victories for AS FAR and Espérance de Tunis highlight the continued dominance of North African clubs in top-level continental competitions.
In other quarter-final fixtures scheduled for March 22, Mamelodi Sundowns were set to face Stade Malien, while Al Hilal Omdurman were due to take on RS Berkane, matches that will complete the lineup of the four semi-finalists.
The results from Saturday have reshaped the outlook of the competition, underlining the high level of competition and the declining dominance of some of Africa’s traditional football powerhouses.
