The Government of Tanzania has reaffirmed its commitment to developing local talent after announcing plans to establish a special league exclusively for domestic players.
The announcement was made today by the Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Paul Makonda, during the opening of a meeting for Sports and Culture Officers.
Speaking at the meeting, Makonda explained that the government is planning to introduce a league system that will involve only Tanzanian players, with the goal of creating more opportunities for local talent to thrive.
He emphasized that many young players fail to secure opportunities at the top level due to intense competition in the Premier League, especially because of the high number of foreign players.
In his remarks, Makonda highlighted a key challenge in the current football system, where top-tier clubs are allowed to register a large number of foreign players, limiting chances for local footballers.
Through the new league, the government aims to:
- Provide a dedicated platform for local talent
- Prepare a new generation of players to represent the national team
- Strengthen competitiveness in domestic football
Public Institutions to Be Integrated into the System
In another significant move, Makonda encouraged public institutions to revive or establish their own football teams. He mentioned that institutions with strong financial and operational capacity could play a major role in advancing sports development in the country.
This initiative seeks to revive a past culture where government institutions were key pillars in the growth of sports.
Makonda also revealed that he has already held discussions with top government leaders regarding the plan. He noted that senior leadership has shown support for the idea and is ready to collaborate in its implementation.
This indicates that the initiative is not experimental, but rather part of a broader national strategy to develop sports in Tanzania.
