Somalia World Cup Referee Omar Artan Welcomed Home as Hero After US Entry Ban

Hundreds of residents turned up at Mogadishu International Airport to give a heroic welcome to Somali football referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan after his return home, following his denial of entry into the United States, which ended his chance of officiating at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Artan, 34, had been selected by FIFA as one of the referees for the tournament hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. His appointment was historic, as he would have become the first Somali referee to officiate at a World Cup.

However, the dream was abruptly cut short after US immigration officials denied him entry upon arrival at Miami International Airport. According to US authorities, Artan was refused entry due to “vetting concerns,” despite holding a valid visa and a diplomatic passport.

Detained and Returned

Reports indicate that the referee was held for several hours and questioned before being instructed to leave the country. FIFA later confirmed that he would not participate in the World Cup 2026, as all referees are required to attend mandatory preparation camps in the United States prior to officiating matches.

A Hero’s Welcome at Home

Despite the setback, Artan was received as a national hero in Somalia. Fans, sports officials, and football stakeholders gathered to honour his achievements and his representation of Somalia on the global stage.

Speaking after his arrival, Artan expressed disappointment at missing the historic opportunity but remained optimistic about his future in refereeing.

“Despite what happened, I remain positive and focused on the challenges ahead in my refereeing career,” he was quoted as saying.

Best Referee in Africa

Before the incident, Artan had enjoyed a remarkable rise in African football. In 2025, he was named CAF Male Referee of the Year by the Confederation of African Football, cementing his status as one of the continent’s top officials.

FIFA and Somalia Respond

FIFA stated that it has no control over immigration decisions made by host nations, confirming that Artan would be unable to take part in the tournament. The Somali Football Federation and the Somali government also expressed disappointment and said they are seeking clarification on the matter.

Global Debate

The incident has sparked widespread debate over the impact of US immigration policies on the 2026 World Cup. Analysts and sports stakeholders have questioned how such a situation could occur to an officially accredited FIFA referee.

Although he missed the chance to officiate at the World Cup, many in Somalia already regard Omar Artan as a historic figure. The emotional reception in Mogadishu reflected the pride he has brought to the country.
