Switzerland Eliminate Algeria from World Cup 2026 After 2–0 Victory

Algeria have ended their 2026 World Cup campaign after suffering a 2–0 defeat to Switzerland in the Round of 32, a match played in Vancouver.

The result is a major setback for “The Desert Warriors,” who had hoped to progress further in the tournament but were ultimately punished by defensive errors that cost them a place in the next round.

Switzerland took an early lead in the 10th minute through striker Breel Embolo, who finished a fast counter-attacking move.

The early goal put Algeria under immediate pressure, forcing them to chase an equaliser for the remainder of the first half without success.

The second half began with another blow, as Dan Ndoye scored early to double Switzerland’s lead to 2–0.

Algeria Fail to Capitalise on Chances

Despite dominating possession and attempting to get back into the match, Algeria lacked sharpness in front of goal. Even their key players were unable to break through Switzerland’s organised defence.

Captain Riyad Mahrez had a crucial opportunity to reduce the deficit but failed to convert, further deepening Algeria’s frustration.

Coach Admits Costly Mistakes

Algeria head coach Vladimir Petkovic admitted that his team were punished for tactical and technical errors, noting that Switzerland made the most of their limited chances.

He said the level of competition was high and Algeria were unable to fully match the intensity of knockout-stage football.

Switzerland Progress

With the win, Switzerland advance to the Round of 16 where they will face the winner between Colombia and Ghana.

It is a strong achievement for Switzerland, who showed discipline and clinical finishing to secure a crucial victory.
