Manqoba Mngqithi Takes Charge at Yanga as Club Eyes Continental Success

Young Africans (Yanga) have entered a new chapter after appointing South African coach Manqoba Mngqithi as head coach ahead of the 2026/27 season. His arrival comes with high expectations from the club's leadership, players, and supporters, who believe his experience can lead Yanga to even greater success, particularly in continental competitions.

Mngqithi joins Yanga from Golden Arrows, where he departed at the end of the 2025/26 season. He takes over the position that has been vacant since Pedro Gonçalves left the club in May.

Experience That Brings Hope

The 55-year-old coach is no stranger to African football. He has managed several South African clubs, including Golden Arrows, AmaZulu, and Chippa United, but his greatest achievements came during his time at Mamelodi Sundowns.

During more than 11 years at Sundowns, Mngqithi played a key role in the coaching staff led by Pitso Mosimane before later serving alongside Rulani Mokwena as co-head coach. During that period, Sundowns won major trophies, including the CAF Champions League and the African Football League.

That wealth of experience is viewed as a major asset for Yanga, a club that has dominated Tanzanian football in recent years but continues to pursue greater success on the continental stage.

Although Yanga have won multiple Tanzania Mainland Premier League titles in recent seasons, the club has struggled to progress beyond the latter stages of CAF competitions, particularly when facing North African powerhouses.

Mngqithi is expected to use his experience of competing in and winning CAF tournaments to help the Tanzanian champions raise their level and realize their ambition of lifting Africa's most prestigious club trophy.

A South African Flavor to the Kariakoo Derby

In addition to continental challenges, Mngqithi will face fierce domestic competition in the Kariakoo Derby against Simba SC.

The rivalry now carries added intrigue, with both clubs led by South African coaches. Simba are coached by Steve Barker, who transformed the team into Yanga's strongest title challenger last season despite finishing as runners-up. Barker also guided Simba to the CRDB Federation Cup title.

A coaching rivalry that has previously been seen in South African football is now moving to Tanzania, a development expected to raise the quality of the league and make the Kariakoo Derby an even bigger attraction.

Can Mngqithi Lead Yanga to the Promised Land?

Mngqithi's success will not be measured solely by winning domestic trophies, but by his ability to turn Yanga into a team capable of competing with—and intimidating—Africa's elite clubs in CAF competitions.

With his extensive experience, proven record of success, and ability to build highly competitive teams, Yanga supporters have every reason to believe his appointment could mark the beginning of a new era of success, not only in Tanzania but across African football.
