Simba Coach Steve Barker Mourns the Passing of South African Star Jayden Adams

Simba head coach Steve Barker has expressed his shock following the death of South African international midfielder Jayden Adams, who recently passed away at the age of 25.

Barker, who played an important role in Adams’ development journey during his time at Stellenbosch FC, said he was left without words to describe the pain he felt after receiving the tragic news.

“I am heartbroken and left without words. I first saw Jayden when he was 15 years old when he joined the Stellenbosch FC Academy, and I had the opportunity to be involved in his development as a player,” Barker said.

The Journey of a Stellenbosch-Born Star

Jayden Adams was one of the biggest success stories from the Stellenbosch FC academy. He became the first player from the club’s academy to be promoted and sign a professional contract in 2020, before going on to become one of the best midfielders in the South African Premier League.

During his time at Stellenbosch, Adams made more than 100 appearances for the club and became an example of the team’s commitment to developing homegrown talent. His performances also earned him a call-up to the South African national team, Bafana Bafana.

He Had Big Dreams

Adams left Stellenbosch and joined Mamelodi Sundowns in 2025, where he continued to showcase his ability and won major trophies, including the South African Premier League title and the CAF Champions League.

He was also part of the Bafana Bafana squad at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, making three appearances in the tournament before his passing.

South Africa Mourns

Adams’ death has left a huge void in South African football. The country’s footballers’ association and various leaders expressed their sadness, describing him as a great talent lost far too soon.

Stellenbosch FC also paid tribute to the player, saying Adams was more than just a footballer; he was an inspiration to many young players who dreamed of reaching the highest level in the sport.

For Steve Barker, Adams’ legacy will not only be remembered on the football pitch, but also through the journey of seeing a talented youngster rise from an academy player to a national team star.

“Jayden had great ability, a wonderful character, and a desire to learn. Losing his life while he still had so much more to offer is extremely painful,” Barker added.
