Arsenal vs Manchester City: Community Shield Set to Open New English Season

Today, Sunday, August 16, 2026, Arsenal and Manchester City will meet in the FA Community Shield, marking the official opening of the new English football season.

The match will be played at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, kicking off at 5:00 p.m. East Africa Time (EAT).

This is more than just a pre-season fixture. Arsenal enter the match as last season’s Premier League champions, while Manchester City are competing as FA Cup winners. Beyond the trophy itself, the match will provide the first major test of both teams’ strength ahead of the new season.

Arsenal go into the game with the advantage of continuity under Mikel Arteta. After winning the Premier League, The Gunners will be eager to demonstrate that their success was not a one-season achievement.

One of the major talking points ahead of the match is the availability of Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi. Arteta has confirmed that the players are ready to feature after returning to training following their extended breaks.

However, Arsenal still face fitness concerns in defence. William Saliba remains sidelined with an injury, while Jurrien Timber needs more time before returning to full training.

In terms of preparation, Arsenal head into the match with an element of uncertainty. Their pre-season results have been mixed, making this an important test of their readiness for the new campaign.

For Manchester City, the match carries added significance as it marks the beginning of a new era following Pep Guardiola’s departure.

Enzo Maresca is now at the helm of City, meaning the Community Shield will be his first competitive match as the club’s head coach.

Maresca takes charge of a squad packed with world-class talent, but he still needs to establish his own tactical identity. This could make City look different from the team fans became accustomed to under Guardiola.

The good news for City is that Erling Haaland is fit to start, while Phil Foden is expected to play an important role behind the striker. Rodri, however, is the key player reportedly set to miss the match.

City also ended their pre-season preparations with a 3-1 victory over Atletico Madrid, a result that could provide them with confidence ahead of their meeting with Arsenal.
