Atlético Madrid head coach Diego Simeone has heaped praise on Barcelona after his side defeated Real Madrid 2-1 in the Madrid Derby, saying he considers Barcelona the best team in the world at the moment.
Speaking to ESPN after the match, Simeone said Barcelona appear to be playing at a different level compared with other teams, highlighting their attacking system and the intensity with which they press their opponents. He singled out Raphinha, who, according to Simeone, has already scored 12 goals this season, as well as Lamine Yamal, who has seven goals.
Simeone also praised Barcelona’s ability to press opponents even when playing at home, saying they give their opponents little time to make decisions and are not afraid to take risks during matches. “Personally, I consider Barcelona the best team in the world right now,” Simeone said.
His comments came after Atlético secured a 2-1 victory over Real Madrid on September 20. Alejandro Grimaldo opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Jonathan David added a second, while Antonio Rüdiger scored Real Madrid’s consolation goal late in the match. The victory moved Atlético to 16 points in second place, behind Barcelona.
