Taifa Stars head into their upcoming international fixtures without former captain Mbwana Ally Samatta, who announced his retirement from the national team in July this year after representing Tanzania for around 15 years.
Samatta served as Taifa Stars captain for approximately 10 years and was part of the generation that helped Tanzania qualify for the AFCON finals on several occasions, including reaching the round of 16 for the first time in the tournament’s history. His decision to retire was driven by his desire to give a new generation the opportunity to take the national team forward.
Before his retirement, some football stakeholders in Tanzania expressed reservations about the decision, arguing that Samatta’s experience and leadership could still be valuable to Taifa Stars ahead of AFCON 2027, which Tanzania will co-host. Head coach Miguel Gamondi also revealed that he had spoken with Samatta about the decision and respected his position, while describing him as a leader who has made a significant contribution to the development of Tanzanian football.
Gamondi is now tasked with building a new generation of Taifa Stars players as the squad prepares for upcoming matches against Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar. Samatta’s absence provides an opportunity for other players to take on leadership responsibilities and demonstrate their ability as the national team enters a new chapter.
