The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has decided to terminate head coach Carlos Queiroz’s contract after the Black Stars made a poor start to their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.
Ghana have lost their opening two matches in Group C, suffering a 2-0 defeat away to Côte d’Ivoire before losing 4-2 at home to Gambia. The results have left the Black Stars facing a difficult challenge in their bid to qualify for the tournament.
In a statement, the GFA said the decision was made in the best interests of Ghanaian football, while acknowledging Queiroz’s contribution during his time in charge. The Portuguese coach was part of Ghana’s journey at the 2026 World Cup, where the team reached the Round of 32.
However, the disappointing start to the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign has prompted the GFA to part ways with the experienced coach, who now leaves the Black Stars with the team still facing a major task in their fight for qualification.
Ghana are now expected to begin the process of appointing a new head coach who will be tasked with guiding the team through their remaining 2027 AFCON qualifiers. The tournament will be jointly hosted by Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda.
