Match 184 Controversy: How Simba vs Yanga Saga Sparked Reform in Tanzanian Football

On March 7, 2025, outside the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, an unexpected standoff occurred between Simba SC and the stadium officials. Simba had arrived for their final training session ahead of NBC Premier League match number 184 against their archrivals, Yanga SC.

What began as a routine dispute soon escalated into a major issue, sparking wide debate on the management of football in Tanzania.

What followed was a series of events that shook Tanzanian football. Simba left without training and later that night issued a letter declaring their withdrawal from the match, citing "interference by Yanga’s security personnel" as the reason.

However, many felt this reason was insufficient to justify boycotting such a crucial match.

A Shocking Decision

Despite a statement from the Premier League Board (PLB) affirming the match would proceed as scheduled on March 8, the situation abruptly changed. By 2 PM on match day, the PLB announced the match had been postponed, leaving football stakeholders across the country stunned.

Yanga, on their part, had followed all procedures and showed up at the stadium ready to play but found no match officials present.

Yanga's Complaint and the Pursuit of Justice

Yanga wasted no time. They released a statement condemning the match postponement and demanded the resignation of top officials from the PLB and the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF). When their concerns were ignored, they took their complaint to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Though CAS did not take up the case directly, it referred it back to local authorities as the first step toward resolution.

Distrustful of TFF's impartiality, Yanga turned to the National Sports Council (BMT). This led to a reconciliation meeting between Yanga and the PLB, during which Yanga insisted they would not play unless serious measures were taken.

Victory for Football – Leadership Changes

The matter eventually reached the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, who summoned and listened to both parties. The actions that followed confirmed Yanga had valid concerns.

  • The Chairman of the PLB, Steven Mnguto, resigned.
  • The PLB’s Chief Executive Officer, Almas Kasongo, was dismissed by TFF President Wallace Karia.
  • Match 184 was rescheduled from June 15 to June 25.

These changes were not only a win for Yanga but brought hope to every club in the Premier League. For a long time, some clubs felt victimized by unfair decisions, but now a new light seems to be shining.

An Independent League Board – A New Hope

The proposal to establish an independent Premier League Board has been widely applauded. Many of the conflicts in Tanzanian football have been fueled by conflicts of interest between the PLB and TFF. An independent board would ensure that procedures are followed with fairness, transparency, and impartiality β€” all essential for enhancing the integrity of the league.

This is not just Yanga’s victory β€” it's a win for Tanzanian football. It is a triumph of transparency, good governance, and accountable leadership. These reforms could mark the beginning of a new era for Tanzanian football where justice, responsibility, and the dignity of the sport are placed above all else.
