Simba head coach Steve Barker has expressed satisfaction with Yusuph Kagoma’s ability to play in different positions on the pitch, opening the possibility of continuing to use the midfielder as a centre-back whenever the team’s needs require it.
Barker’s decision to move Kagoma into central defence was evident in Simba’s emphatic 6-1 victory over Kigoma-based Mashujaa last Tuesday at Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
In that match, Kagoma partnered Ismail Toure to strengthen the defence, carrying out a role that is not usually associated with him, as he is more accustomed to playing in midfield.
The move was prompted by the absence of defender Rushine De Reuck, who, according to reports, is dealing with family-related challenges. However, Barker opted to make use of the resources available within his squad rather than allow the shortage of players to become an obstacle.
Barker: Players Must Be Ready for New Roles
Barker explained that having players capable of performing in more than one position is a major advantage for a team, especially during periods when the squad may be affected by injuries, player absences or other challenges that influence team selection.
The coach said he has consistently encouraged his players to be ready to take on different responsibilities according to the team’s needs.
“It is an advantage to have a player like Kagoma. Sometimes you can lose players for various reasons, so it is good to have that flexibility. I have always told my players that you need to be ready to take on different roles,” Barker said.
For his part, Kagoma has shown that he has no problem being assigned a new role, noting that his experience playing in different positions has prepared him to carry out the technical bench’s instructions.
The midfielder said he is comfortable playing as a defensive midfielder, a central midfielder and even a right-back, meaning he does not view being deployed at centre-back as an obstacle.
“Of the positions I have played, I think I have even played right-back, number six and number eight. I can play anywhere,” Kagoma said.
