The Federation of East and Central African Football Associations (CECAFA), has announced that the CECAFA Kagame Cup in 2024 will be held in Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar from July 6 to 22 this year involving 16 teams
The three invited teams, TP Mazembe (DR Congo), Nyasa Big Bullets (Malawi) and Red Arrows FC of Zambia have all confirmed their participation to join the other 13 teams from the CECAFA Zone
Initially, the tournament was scheduled to take place from July 20 to August 4 this year in Tanzania, but due to the schedule of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) showing the start of August, CECAFA have seen their tournament start earlier and end a few days before the start of the the CAF championship at the club level in the 2024/2025 season
"This competition will help our teams in this region to prepare well before the season of CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup 2024/2025 which starts in August. Having big teams from DR Congo, Malawi and Zambia will also add excitement to our competition and provide a real challenge to our teams," said the CEO of CECAFA, John Auko Gecheo
As a result, the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup in 2024 which involves the national teams that was scheduled to open the CECAFA Calendar from June 29 to July 14 this year, has been canceled to give the players more time to prepare with their clubs before Cecafa Kagame Cup
The teams that will participate in the Cecafa Kagame Cup are: Vital'O (Burundi), APR (Rwanda), El Merreikh, Al Hilal, Hai El Wadi (Sudan), Yanga, Simba, Azam, Coastal Union (Tanzania), Gor Mahia (Kenya), SC Villa (Uganda), JKU SC (Zanzibar), El Merreikh FC-Bentiu (South Sudan), Nyasa Big Bullets (Malawi), TP Mazembe (DR Congo) and Red Arrows (Zambia).
