German club Schalke 04 have confirmed the signing of experienced international striker Edin Dzeko to help the club in their efforts to return to the Bundesliga. Dzeko, who will turn 40 in March, moved last season to Serie A side Fiorentina.
However, Dzeko, who has started only a few matches this season for Fiorentina, has now returned to Germany to join Schalke in their bid for promotion back to the top flight.
Official Schalke 04 statement said:
"FC Schalke 04 have strengthened their attacking line by signing an experienced international player, Edin Dzeko, for the remaining 16 matches of the 2025/26 season. The player, who holds the record for most appearances for Bosnia and Herzegovina, recently played in Serie A for Fiorentina and is one of the top strikers of his generation. The 39-year-old will wear jersey number 10 for Schalke."
Dzeko expressed his excitement about joining Schalke:
"When I saw there was interest from Schalke, I carefully studied the club and watched several matches. My conversations with the club, head coach Miron Muslic, and of course Nikola Katic among others, were very positive."
"It is exciting to see how the team has progressed this season after a few challenging years. Now I want to give my all to achieve success together in the second half of the season."
"I am very eager to play my first home match in front of the fans at the VELTINS-Arena at full capacity."
The experienced striker previously spent three and a half years in the Bundesliga with Wolfsburg before being signed by Manchester City in January 2011.
His signing for Schalke signals the club’s intention to use his experience and quality to ensure a strong return to the Bundesliga this season.
