Mass Brawl in Campeonato Mineiro Final Leads to 23 Red Cards

The final of the Campeonato Mineiro tournament in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais turned into an embarrassing incident after a major brawl broke out between rivals Cruzeiro and Atlético Mineiro, resulting in a total of 23 players receiving red cards.

The match, played at Mineirão Stadium in Belo Horizonte, ended with Cruzeiro winning 1–0 thanks to a goal from striker Kaio Jorge. However, the victory was overshadowed by violent scenes that erupted in the final minutes of the game.

The confrontation began during stoppage time when Atlético Mineiro goalkeeper Everson collided with Cruzeiro midfielder Christian while challenging for a loose ball.

After the incident, Everson appeared to jump on Christian, who was already on the ground, pressing his knee onto him. This angered Cruzeiro players and triggered a massive fight on the pitch.

Players and Benches Join the Fight

The chaos quickly escalated as players, coaches, and even substitutes from both teams became involved in the confrontation, which included kicks and punches.

Videos circulating on social media appeared to show Atlético Mineiro star and former Brazil international Hulk taking part in the altercation by striking an opponent.

Stadium security and police were forced to intervene to restore order, with the match halted for several minutes before it was officially concluded.

Record Number of Red Cards

After the match, referee Matheus Delgado Candancan wrote in his official report that a total of 23 players were sent off, including 12 from Cruzeiro and 11 from Atlético Mineiro.

This number set a new record in Brazilian football history, surpassing the previous record of 22 red cards issued in a 1954 match between Portuguesa and Botafogo.

Regret After the Incident

After the match, striker Hulk admitted the incident was unfortunate and should not happen in professional football.

“It is very sad. I have never seen violence like this in a football match,” said Hulk, emphasizing that players must protect the integrity of the game.

What Happens Next?

Brazilian football authorities are expected to investigate the incident, and players involved could face heavy sanctions and multi-match suspensions due to the violence.

Despite the chaotic scenes, Cruzeiro were officially confirmed as the Campeonato Mineiro champions, winning the title for the first time since 2019.
