Atlético and Bayern Shine as Champions League Round of 16 First Legs Deliver Drama

The UEFA Champions League continued on Tuesday night, March 10, 2026, with Round of 16 first-leg matches producing big wins, surprises, and a late equalizer that kept several ties wide open ahead of the return legs.

Atlético Madrid 5–2 Tottenham Hotspur

Atlético Madrid secured a convincing 5–2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at the Metropolitano Stadium. The win places the Spanish side in a strong position to qualify for the quarterfinals before the second leg in England.

Atlético displayed impressive attacking quality and controlled much of the match, making life difficult for the visitors. The result means Tottenham will have to produce a major comeback in the return leg to keep their hopes alive.

Atalanta 1–6 Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich delivered a dominant performance by defeating Atalanta 6–1 in a match played in Italy.

The emphatic victory puts Bayern in a very strong position to advance to the quarterfinals, with Atalanta now needing a huge win in the second leg in Germany to overturn the deficit.

Galatasaray 1–0 Liverpool

Turkish giants Galatasaray recorded a narrow 1–0 win against Liverpool at RAMS Park in Istanbul.

The only goal of the match came in the 7th minute when Mario Lemina headed home from a corner kick. The result gives Galatasaray a slim advantage ahead of the return leg at Anfield.

Newcastle United 1–1 Barcelona

In another encounter, Barcelona managed to avoid defeat after drawing 1–1 with Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

Newcastle opened the scoring, but Barcelona equalized in the closing minutes through a penalty from Lamine Yamal, giving the Spanish side hope heading into the second leg in Spain.

Earlier in the evening, Liverpool suffered a 1–0 defeat away in Turkey against Galatasaray.
