Sadio Mané Reacts as CAF Strips Senegal of AFCON 2025 Title

Senegal international star Sadio Mané has expressed shock over the decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to strip Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title and award it to Morocco instead.

Speaking after the controversial decision, Mané said the move had stunned both players and football fans, insisting it was unfair to a team that fought and won on the pitch.

“We fought with everything and won fairly, but decisions off the pitch have changed everything,” he was quoted as saying in an interview with international media.

Source of the Dispute

The final of the tournament was played earlier this year in Rabat, where Senegal were initially declared winners after defeating Morocco 1-0 in extra time.

However, the match was marred by controversy after Senegal players temporarily walked off the pitch in protest of a penalty awarded to Morocco in the closing minutes.

According to CAF, that action violated competition regulations, leading to Senegal being sanctioned with a forfeit. The result was then overturned to a 3-0 victory in favor of Morocco.

Senegal Rejects the Decision

The Senegal Football Federation has strongly opposed the ruling, calling it unjust and announcing plans to challenge the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

This move has been supported by many players and fans, who have voiced dissatisfaction with how the matter was handled.

Ongoing Debate

CAF’s decision has sparked widespread debate across Africa and globally, with football analysts divided over its legitimacy.

While some argue that the rules were correctly applied, others believe the decision has undermined the integrity of the game and shaken fans’ trust.
