CAF Faces Growing Scrutiny Amid Allegations of Bias and Governance Concerns

Tensions continue to shake the Confederation of African Football (CAF), as allegations of bias, political influence, and controversial administrative decisions raise serious questions about the institution’s credibility.

Various international reports indicate that some football leaders across Africa have begun expressing concern over decision-making within CAF, linking the situation to the strong influence of certain top officials, including Faouzi Lekjaa.

Lekjaa, who is also a leading football figure in Morocco, is regarded as one of the most powerful individuals within CAF, sparking debate about the balance of power within the organization.

Controversial Decisions Spark Anger

These concerns have been further fueled by recent incidents in African competitions, where refereeing decisions and disciplinary actions have been strongly contested by some member nations.

In one of the most controversial cases, the decision to overturn the result of an AFCON final match triggered widespread debate, with some stakeholders claiming bias. The move led several football associations to question CAF’s transparency and even threaten legal action.

There have also been calls for an independent investigation to determine whether improper influence is affecting executive decisions within the federation.

Leadership Conflicts Emerge

At the same time, tensions among top football leaders have become more visible. Cameroon Football Federation president Samuel Eto’o is among those who have openly criticized CAF over refereeing and disciplinary decisions.

Eto’o, who has also faced disciplinary action from CAF, has expressed dissatisfaction with certain rulings, highlighting divisions within African football leadership.

CAF president Patrice Motsepe has previously acknowledged that African football faces a credibility challenge, emphasizing the need for reforms to protect the integrity of continental competitions.

Calls for Reform

Football analysts believe the ongoing situation within CAF could hinder the development of the sport in Africa if not addressed promptly.

Some stakeholders are calling for:

  • Greater transparency in decision-making
  • The establishment of independent refereeing oversight systems
  • Reduced political influence in football governance

Fact vs Speculation

Despite the widespread reports, some claims circulating on social media remain unverified by major and credible news sources.
