CAF President Slams Senegal Over Controversial AFCON 2025 Celebration

The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, has expressed strong anger following the decision by the Senegal national team to hold AFCON 2025 victory celebrations in Paris, France, despite being officially stripped of the title.

Senegal held the celebrations on Saturday, March 28, 2026, showcasing the trophy to their fans in Europe, a move that has sparked widespread debate both within and outside Africa.

CAF had already announced that Morocco are the rightful AFCON 2025 champions after nullifying Senegal’s victory due to violations of competition regulations during the final match.

Speaking on the matter, Motsepe emphasized that CAF’s decisions are final and must be respected by all members.

“We respect the decision made at the highest level. Morocco have been crowned AFCON 2025 champions,” said Motsepe.

The CAF leader also criticized Senegal’s decision to hold the celebrations outside Africa, stating that the move was inappropriate.

“Senegal should not have celebrated in Europe unless they feared the AFCON trophy would be taken away from them,” he added.

Sanctions Likely to Increase

Following this incident, Senegal now face the possibility of further disciplinary action from CAF.

Reports indicate that potential measures could include additional fines for defying federation decisions, as well as disciplinary actions against officials or related institutions.

Additionally, Senegal could face restrictions in future CAF competitions, with the possibility of FIFA stepping in regarding recognition of the title and distribution of prize money.

Source of the Dispute

The conflict began during the AFCON 2025 final when Senegal walked off the pitch in protest against refereeing decisions before returning to continue the match.

Despite winning on the field, CAF interpreted the action as a breach of competition rules, nullified the result, and declared Morocco champions in accordance with regulations.

Appeal Filed

Meanwhile, the Senegal Football Federation has filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), challenging the decision and claiming it did not follow due process or fairness.

However, Senegal’s continued celebration of the title has further escalated tensions with CAF, with analysts warning it could negatively impact the team’s future in international competitions.

Image of African Football

This saga continues to draw strong reactions from football stakeholders across Africa and globally, placing pressure on CAF to enforce its regulations consistently.

All eyes are now on the final ruling from CAS, which could determine the fate of the AFCON 2025 title and the future of Senegal in international football.
