CAF Secretary General Veron Mosengo-Omba Resigns After Decades of Service

The Secretary General of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Veron Mosengo-Omba, has officially announced his resignation, effective Sunday, March 29, 2026. The decision comes after more than 30 years of service in international football and significant contributions to continental competitions.

MosengoOmba had served as Secretary General since 2021 following his appointment by CAF President Patrice Motsepe, and was one of the key executive leaders of the federation. In his resignation statement, he expressed that he feels it is the right time to hand over responsibilities to the next generation of leadership.

Reasons for Resignation

The former Secretary General stated that his decision is personal, following several internal challenges, including debates about his retirement age, which aligns with CAF regulations limiting senior officials’ service to age 63.

MosengoOmba had been granted a three-year extension, which has now come to an end.

“It is time to hand over to a leader better suited to advance the federation’s agenda,” MosengoOmba said.

Naming His Successor

So far, CAF has not issued an official statement regarding his successor. However, recent rumors indicate that Nigerian official Samson Adamu appears to be the leading candidate to take over, suggesting a direct succession from MosengoOmba.

Legacy and Contributions

During his tenure, MosengoOmba implemented several financial and operational reforms, increased transparency in CAF competitions, and strengthened the international governance of African football tournaments. Nevertheless, some stakeholders criticized him for lack of transparency, which added internal pressure within the federation’s leadership.
