Carlos Queiroz Begins Ghana Coaching Role Ahead of 2026 World Cup

Veteran international coach Carlos Queiroz has arrived in Ghana and officially begun his role as head coach of the national team, the Black Stars, as preparations begin for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Queiroz, who was appointed by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) earlier in April 2026, landed in Accra to a warm reception at Kotoka International Airport, where he was welcomed by football officials and fans.

The 73-year-old coach takes over following the departure of Otto Addo and has been tasked with preparing Ghana for the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

According to GFA sources, Queiroz is expected to be officially unveiled to the public and media on April 23, 2026, in Accra—an event that will mark the beginning of a new era for the Black Stars’ technical bench.

As he begins his duties, the coach is set to immediately oversee team preparations, including organizing international friendly matches ahead of the World Cup tournament.

Queiroz is widely regarded as one of the most experienced coaches in international football, having previously managed national teams such as Portugal, Iran, Egypt, and Colombia, as well as top European clubs.

He led Portugal to the knockout stages of the 2010 FIFA World Cup and guided Iran in multiple World Cup editions, giving Ghana renewed hope of performing strongly in the upcoming tournament.

Ghana’s Ambitions for the World Cup

The appointment of Queiroz is seen as part of Ghana’s broader strategy to regain its competitive edge in international football, especially after underwhelming performances in recent tournaments.

The country’s football federation believes that his experience and tactical discipline will help build a strong squad capable of competing at the highest level.
