FIFA introduces new on-field rule changes ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The FIFA Council has approved major rule changes set to be implemented at the FIFA World Cup 2026, aiming to reshape the flow of the game and improve discipline among all players—from top stars to substitutes. This marks the beginning of a new era in football governance for the tournament, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Among the key changes, FIFA has decided that all yellow cards will be cleared after the group stage, and again after the quarterfinals. This move is intended to give players a fresh start at crucial stages of the competition and reduce the chances of star players missing semifinals or the final due to accumulated yellow cards.

In addition, FIFA has strengthened punishments for acts considered indiscipline on the pitch. Any player who leaves the field in anger to protest a referee’s decision will receive an automatic red card. Similarly, a player who covers their mouth while arguing with an opponent will also be shown a straight red card—measures aimed at promoting transparency and respect in the game.

Overall, these changes are designed to protect the integrity of football, reduce time-wasting, and ensure that top players are present in the decisive stages of the tournament. FIFA has made it clear that the 2026 World Cup will have a new look—more disciplined, highly competitive, and even more exciting for fans worldwide.
