Can AS FAR Overturn Sundowns in the CAF Champions League Final?

Can AS FAR Overturn Sundowns in the CAF Champions League Final?

After Mamelodi Sundowns secured a narrow 1-0 victory in the first leg of the CAF Champions League final in Pretoria, Africa’s attention now shifts to Rabat, Morocco, where AS FAR must produce something special in front of their home fans to lift the continental title.

But the big question remains: can AS FAR really overturn the deficit against Sundowns?

Why Many Still Believe AS FAR Have a Chance

AS FAR are not an ordinary team. Their journey to the final included eliminating defending champions Pyramids and RS Berkane. In the quarterfinals, they went to Cairo and defeated Pyramids, proving they can perform under immense pressure.

Their coach, Alexandre Santos, has built a disciplined side with defensive organization, midfield strength, and dangerous counterattacks led by players such as Ahmed Hammoudan and Hrimat. That is why many believe the match in Rabat could look very different from the one played in Pretoria.

Another major advantage for AS FAR is home support. Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium is expected to be packed with Moroccan fans who will put heavy pressure on Sundowns from the opening minutes. In African competitions, home atmosphere often becomes a decisive weapon.

Sundowns Look More Experienced and Prepared

Despite that, the reality is that Sundowns enter this match with greater experience in high-pressure finals. They have reached several finals in recent years and possess a squad full of composure and quality.

Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams continues to be a key figure, while the attack has been led by Brayan Leon, who has been in excellent form during the knockout stages.

Coach Miguel Cardoso has also shown impressive tactical intelligence in pressure matches. His recent comments made it clear that Sundowns are taking AS FAR very seriously:

“Anyone who thinks the final will be easy is mistaken.”

That statement shows Sundowns fully understand the challenge awaiting them in Morocco.

The Match Could Be Decided by One Key Moment

The biggest factor on Sunday could simply be which team scores first.

  • If AS FAR score early, the entire momentum of the match could shift and the pressure would immediately move onto Sundowns.

  • However, if Sundowns score an away goal, AS FAR would suddenly need several goals, making the task extremely difficult.

One concern for AS FAR is that Sundowns missed several chances in the first leg. If they are more clinical in Rabat, they could kill off the tie early.

Prediction

AS FAR certainly have the ability to win at home thanks to their confidence, crowd support, and fighting spirit. However, overturning Sundowns over two legs will not be easy.

The match is likely to be tense, tactical, and low-scoring. Sundowns appear to have greater experience and composure to handle the occasion, unless AS FAR make a blazing start.

Prediction:
AS FAR 1-1 Sundowns
Sundowns to win the CAF Champions League.
