Brazil Held to 1-1 Draw by Morocco in World Cup 2026 Opener

Brazil failed to begin their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a victory after being held to a 1-1 draw by Morocco in a Group C match played at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, United States.

Morocco took the lead in the 21st minute through midfielder Ismael Saibari, who capitalized on defensive errors from Brazil. The African side looked the stronger team for much of the first half, controlling the midfield and preventing Brazil from playing their usual style of football.

However, Brazil responded in the 32nd minute through star forward Vinícius Júnior, whose powerful strike beat goalkeeper Yassine Bounou to level the score. The goal gave Brazil renewed confidence and restored hope among their supporters.

In the second half, both teams created opportunities to score the winner, but the goalkeepers at either end produced important saves to keep the score level. Morocco continued to display excellent defensive discipline, while Brazil struggled to find enough creativity in midfield and attack.

The result means both teams earn one point from their opening Group C fixture. The draw is viewed as a particularly positive outcome for Morocco, who continue to build on the momentum gained from their historic run to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup.

For Brazil, new head coach Carlo Ancelotti will need to address the tactical issues that emerged during the match if he hopes to guide the Seleção to a sixth world title.

Group C Standings After the Opening Matches

Scotland currently lead the group after defeating Haiti 1-0. Morocco and Brazil are level on one point each, while Haiti sit at the bottom of the table without a point.

With only one round of matches played, all four teams remain firmly in contention for qualification to the knockout stage, setting up what promises to be a highly competitive group.
