Ghana keep Africa hopes alive as England make strong start at World Cup 2026

Ghana’s national team, the Black Stars, continued to boost Africa’s hopes at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama in a Group L match played in Toronto, Canada.

The game's only goal came from young midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi in the 95th minute, finishing off a swift counterattack initiated by Brandon Thomas-Asante. The result made Ghana the second African nation to record a victory at the 2026 World Cup.

The match proved to be a tightly contested affair, with Panama appearing the stronger side during the first half. However, Ghana showed tremendous resilience after the break and capitalized on their most important opportunity in stoppage time. Goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi made several crucial saves before being forced off through injury, with Benjamin Asare coming on as his replacement.

With the victory, Ghana have placed themselves in a strong position to challenge for a place in the Round of 16 ahead of their upcoming group-stage encounter against England.

England Show Their Quality Against Croatia

In the other Group L fixture, England opened their World Cup campaign with an impressive 4-2 victory over Croatia. Captain Harry Kane was the star of the show, scoring twice, while Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford also found the net.

Although Croatia provided stiff competition during the first half, Thomas Tuchel’s side raised their level after the interval and ultimately demonstrated their superior quality.

The victory sends England to the top of Group L on goal difference, with Ghana occupying second place.

Attention now turns to the highly anticipated clash between Ghana and England, where the Black Stars will have an opportunity to test themselves against one of the tournament favorites and further prove their credentials on the world stage.
