Ivory Coast suffered a heartbreaking 2–1 defeat to Germany in a Group E match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup played in Toronto, Canada.
The Ivorians made a strong start and opened the scoring in the 30th minute through captain Franck Kessié following a swift attacking move led by the pacey Yan Diomande. The goal gave the Elephants a 1–0 lead heading into halftime.
However, Germany responded strongly in the second half after coach Julian Nagelsmann made key tactical changes. Substitute striker Deniz Undav equalized in the 68th minute from a cross delivered by Nadiem Amiri.
Just when the match appeared to be heading for a draw, Undav emerged as Germany's hero once again in the 90+4th minute, scoring the winning goal after receiving a pass from Felix Nmecha. The dramatic late strike broke the hearts of Ivory Coast players and supporters who were close to earning a valuable result against one of world football’s traditional powerhouses.
The victory moves Germany to six points and secures their place in the World Cup knockout stage, while Ivory Coast remain on three points after two matches. The Elephants still have a chance of progressing but will need a positive result in their final group match against Curaçao.
In addition to the defeat, Ivory Coast suffered another setback when key defender Wilfried Singo picked up an injury during the match, a concern that could affect the team's preparations for their final group-stage encounter.
