Yanga and Azam FC Set for High-Stakes CRDB Cup Semi-Final Showdown

Football fans across Tanzania will turn their attention to CCM Kirumba Stadium in Mwanza this evening as defending CRDB Bank Federation Cup champions Yanga take on Azam FC in a highly anticipated semi-final clash.

The match carries the intensity of a Dar es Salaam derby, bringing together two of Tanzania’s biggest football clubs, both known for producing thrilling encounters whenever they meet. This time, a place in the final is at stake.

This will be the third meeting between Yanga and Azam FC this season. In their previous encounters, Yanga claimed victory in the Muungano Cup, while the Mainland Premier League fixture ended in a goalless draw.

Unlike regular league matches, today's contest must produce a winner. If the teams remain level after 90 minutes, the game will proceed to 30 minutes of extra time, followed by a penalty shootout if necessary.

Yanga enter the match with an impressive record in the Federation Cup. The club has not lost a match in the competition for nearly five years and has accumulated more than 28 consecutive victories. They have also won the tournament in each of the last four seasons and are now chasing a fifth straight title.

Those achievements make Yanga the more confident side heading into the encounter. Furthermore, during their successful run in the competition, they have never been eliminated by Azam FC, adding extra pressure on their opponents.

However, Azam FC have every reason to fight for victory. With their league title hopes already gone, the CRDB Cup represents their best opportunity to finish the season with silverware. Head coach Florent Ibenge has made it clear that his team is determined to break their recent struggles against Yanga and give their supporters something to celebrate.

Azam FC's attacking quality and Ibenge's experience in managing big matches could prove crucial, but they will need exceptional focus against a Yanga side that has consistently shown composure and maturity in knockout competitions.

Meanwhile, Simba SC have already secured their place in the final after defeating Coastal Union. That result adds further motivation for Yanga, who are eager to win and set up another exciting Kariakoo Derby in the CRDB Cup final.

Who Has the Edge?

Based on recent records, experience, and squad depth, Yanga appear to hold a slight advantage in the race for a place in the final. However, Azam FC enter the match with nothing to lose and the added motivation of salvaging their season by winning the trophy.

Knockout football is often decided by small moments and costly mistakes, meaning anything can happen over 90 minutes, extra time, or even penalties.

Will Yanga extend their remarkable record and book a place in the final? Or will Azam FC create a new chapter in their history by eliminating the defending champions? The answer will be revealed this evening at CCM Kirumba Stadium.
