Despite the Democratic Republic of Congo's disappointing results at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, renowned supporter Michel Kuka Mboladinga, better known as "Lumumba Vea," has emerged as one of the tournament's most memorable figures.
Lumumba Vea has captured the attention of football fans and media outlets around the world with his unique way of supporting the DR Congo national team. Unlike most supporters who cheer with songs and chants, he stands completely motionless throughout the entire 90 minutes with one arm raised, recreating the iconic pose of the statue of Congolese independence hero Patrice Lumumba in Kinshasa.
His popularity first grew during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), but his presence at this year's World Cup has brought him even greater international recognition. Even as DR Congo have struggled on the pitch, television cameras have repeatedly focused on Lumumba Vea, while photos and videos of his distinctive support have spread widely across social media.
DR Congo opened their World Cup campaign with a 1-1 draw against Portugal before suffering a 1-0 defeat to Colombia in their second match, leaving their hopes of reaching the knockout stage hanging in the balance. Despite the team's difficult situation, Lumumba Vea has remained unwavering, becoming a symbol of patriotism and hope for Congolese supporters.
In one of his interviews, Lumumba Vea explained that standing motionless throughout the match is not a form of entertainment but rather a tribute to his country's history and to the legacy of Patrice Lumumba, one of the most important figures in DR Congo's struggle for independence.
