Canada and South Africa are set to face off today in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with both nations aiming to reach the knockout stage for the first time in their history.

The match marks a significant milestone for both teams, as neither had previously progressed beyond the group stage before this edition of the tournament.

Canada, under head coach Jesse Marsch, qualified after finishing second in Group B. Their campaign began with a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina, followed by an impressive 6-0 victory over Qatar, before they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Switzerland in their final group match.

South Africa's Bafana Bafana showed remarkable resilience after opening the tournament with a 2-0 loss to Mexico. They bounced back with a 1-1 draw against Czechia before securing a historic 1-0 victory over South Korea to finish as runners-up in Group A and book their place in the knockout rounds.

Canada could receive a major boost if captain Alphonso Davies is fit enough to start after recovering from a hamstring injury. However, midfielder Ismael KonΓ© remains sidelined with a tibia injury, while Stephen Eustaquio is still being assessed. Jonathan David and Cyle Larin are expected to lead Canada's attack.

South Africa, meanwhile, welcome back influential midfielder Teboho Mokoena after he served a suspension, although they will still be without Themba Zwane. Lyle Foster is expected to spearhead the attack, supported by Thapelo Maseko.

According to analytical projections from Opta's The Analyst, Canada are the favorites to win within 90 minutes with a 56.2% probability, while South Africa have been given a 19.7% chance.

Canada are expected to dominate possession and rely on the pace of players such as Tajon Buchanan and Jonathan David, while also looking to capitalize on home support.

South Africa are likely to adopt a disciplined 4-2-3-1 formation, focusing on defensive organization, quick counterattacks, and the shot-stopping ability of goalkeeper Ronwen Williams should the match be decided by a penalty shootout.

The encounter is expected to be closely contested, with the outcome likely to be decided by fine tactical margins, defensive discipline, or moments of quality in front of goal.
