Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez has officially announced his retirement from international football after his country's elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland in the Round of 32. The result secured Switzerland's place in the Round of 16 while bringing Algeria's World Cup campaign to an end.
In the match, played in Vancouver, Breel Embolo opened the scoring for Switzerland in the 10th minute before Dan Ndoye doubled the lead early in the second half. Despite Algeria's efforts to mount a comeback, they were unable to break through Switzerland's disciplined defense.
Speaking after the match, Mahrez confirmed that it was his final appearance in the Algeria national team jersey. He retires from international football having earned 119 caps, scored 40 goals, and provided 45 assists, cementing his place among the greatest players in Algeria's football history.
