Defending champions Argentina booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after coming from behind to defeat Egypt 3-2 in their Round of 16 clash on Tuesday in Atlanta.
Egypt made a stunning start to the match, taking the lead in the 15th minute through Yasser Ibrahim. Despite Argentina dominating possession, the Pharaohs strengthened their advantage when Mostafa Zico scored a second goal in the 67th minute, putting the African side on the verge of a historic upset.
However, Argentina showed why they are the defending world champions. Cristian Romero pulled one back in the 79th minute before captain Lionel Messi equalized four minutes later, making amends after missing a first-half penalty. Just as extra time seemed inevitable, Enzo Fernández headed home the winning goal in stoppage time (90+2), ending Egypt's dream of reaching the quarter-finals.
Despite the defeat, Egypt leave the tournament with their heads held high after reaching the Round of 16 for the first time in their history. They had advanced to the knockout stage by defeating Australia in a penalty shootout.
Egypt's elimination also means that Morocco are now the only remaining African representatives at the 2026 World Cup. Morocco reached the quarter-finals after defeating Canada 3-0 and will now face France for a place in the semi-finals.
Argentina will now await the winner of the match between Switzerland and Colombia to determine their quarter-final opponents as they continue their bid to successfully defend the World Cup title they won in the previous tournament.
