Referees officiating in the Mainland Tanzania Premier League have entered the fifth phase of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) training as preparations continue for the official introduction of the technology in Tanzanian football. The programme is being conducted under the supervision of the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF), led by its president, Wallace Karia.
The training is designed to equip match officials with the knowledge and practical skills required to operate the VAR system effectively. Sessions focus on reviewing key match incidents, including goals, penalty decisions, red-card offences, and cases of mistaken identity. Participants are also undergoing practical exercises that emphasize communication between on-field referees and VAR officials.
The initiative forms part of TFF's broader strategy to improve the standard of officiating in Tanzania and align the country's football with international refereeing standards. Once implemented, VAR is expected to reduce officiating errors, enhance transparency in Mainland Tanzania Premier League matches, and strengthen the confidence of clubs, players, and supporters in local match officials.
