It is official! Pitso Mosimane has returned as head coach of South Africa's national team, Bafana Bafana, after the South African Football Association (SAFA) leadership approved his appointment.
Mosimane takes over from Belgian coach Hugo Broos, who led Bafana Bafana for five years before leaving the position. The SAFA NEC has backed Mosimane as the new head coach, with reports confirming that the decision has been finalized.
For South African football fans, this is more than just a coaching appointment. It marks the return of a coach who already has a history with Bafana Bafana.
Mosimane previously managed the national team between 2010 and 2012. His first spell did not end as he had hoped, but the years that followed transformed his standing in African football.
After leaving the national team, Mosimane built a formidable reputation as coach of Mamelodi Sundowns and later Al Ahly of Egypt.
The Coach Who Conquered Africa
Mosimane's greatest achievements have come in club competitions.
At Mamelodi Sundowns, he led the club to the CAF Champions League title in 2016. A few years later, while in charge of Al Ahly, he won the Champions League twice in succession, in 2020 and 2021.
Mosimane therefore returns to Bafana Bafana with considerably more experience than he had during his first spell in charge.
