Yanga SC have retained the Community Shield for a second consecutive season after defeating Simba SC 1-0 in a fiercely contested match at the New Amaan Complex Stadium in Zanzibar.
After a relatively cautious start, Yanga began to regain possession after the 25th minute and scored the only goal of the match in the 31st minute. Albert Kangwanda was the hero for the Wananchi, heading home a well-delivered cross from Chadrack Boka.
Peter Shalulile came close to adding a second goal a few minutes later, but his effort from just outside the 18-yard box went narrowly wide of the Simba goal.
Yanga continued to control the match in the second half, with head coach Manqoba Mngqithi making a tactical change by introducing Cheikh Touré and moving Shalulile to the right wing.
Simba head coach Steve Barker also made a change, bringing on Elie Mpanzu for Ibrahim Doumbia.
The Wananchi appeared more dangerous in attack than their opponents, while Simba only began to find their rhythm during the final five minutes as they pushed for an equaliser.
However, the resilience of goalkeeper Djigui Diarra and the Yanga defence ensured the lead was protected until the final whistle, securing an important victory for the Wananchi over their traditional rivals.
The trophy is Yanga’s first of the new season and represents a strong start for the Tanzanian champions, who have made it clear that their ambition is to reclaim all available silverware and bring more titles to Jangwani.
