# Xavi Hernandez Appointed New Netherlands Head Coach in Long-Term 2030 Project
The Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB) has officially appointed Xavi Hernandez as the new head coach of the Netherlands national team, on a contract that will keep him in the role through the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
The appointment was announced on August 12, 2026, with Xavi returning to the dugout after leaving Barcelona in 2024.
The 46-year-old Xavi replaces Ronald Koeman, who departed after the Netherlands were eliminated by Morocco in the Round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup.
Koeman had guided the Oranje to the semi-finals of Euro 2024, but his second spell in charge of the national team came to an end following this year's tournament.
He Inherits a Team with a New Generation
Xavi's first task will be to rebuild the Netherlands team ahead of Euro 2028 and, later, the 2030 World Cup.
His schedule begins quickly, with the Netherlands set to face Germany in the UEFA Nations League in Amsterdam on September 24 before taking on Serbia three days later.
The squad combines experienced players such as Virgil van Dijk, Memphis Depay and Cody Gakpo with a new generation led by players including Ryan Gravenberch, Xavi Simons, Jorrel Hato and Tijjani Reijnders.
KNVB statistics show that Xavi Simons has already made 34 international appearances for the Oranje.
Xavi's Philosophy Meets Dutch Football Culture
Xavi's appointment appears to make stylistic sense. The former Barcelona coach is known for emphasizing possession, short passing, attractive football and control of the game — principles that have strong links to the Dutch football philosophy.
Reports from Spain say Xavi has expressed admiration for the legacy of Dutch football, citing Johan Cruyff, Rinus Michels and Louis van Gaal as figures who influenced the way he understands the game.

Netherlands Appoint a Foreign Coach for the First Time in 48 Years
The appointment is also historic. Xavi becomes the first foreign coach to lead the Netherlands national team since Austria's Ernst Happel in 1978. KNVB has therefore made an unusual decision for a nation that has traditionally relied on Dutch coaches.
Before appointing Xavi, KNVB reportedly considered several coaching candidates, with some Dutch coaches either turning down the opportunity or being unwilling to take the position. The federation eventually turned to Xavi and offered him a long-term project running through 2030.
His Coaching Experience
Xavi began his coaching career at Qatari club Al Sadd in 2019, where he won several trophies before returning to Barcelona in 2021 as head coach.
At Barcelona, he guided the club to La Liga and Supercopa de España titles in 2023. He left Barcelona in 2024 and has been away from the dugout since then.
He now faces a completely different challenge: building a national team rather than managing a club, with limited time to train players and a need to make the most of short international breaks.
The Target Is 2028 and 2030
Xavi's contract makes it clear that KNVB is not pursuing a short-term plan. He will be responsible for preparing the Oranje generation for Euro 2028 and ensuring that the team arrives at the 2030 World Cup capable of challenging for the title.
For Xavi, this is also an opportunity to write a new chapter in his coaching career after his final period at Barcelona. For the Netherlands, it is an attempt to combine their historic football philosophy with the modern methods of one of the most renowned midfielders of his generation.
In short, KNVB has placed a major bet on Xavi. A contract through 2030 gives him enough time to build the team, but the pressure will begin immediately, with his first match coming against Germany in the Nations League on September 24.
