The Zanzibar Revolutionary Government (SMZ) has temporarily closed New Amaan Complex Stadium for improvements to the playing surface, including the installation of new grass, as part of preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The move is aimed at ensuring the stadium meets the required standards to host matches during the tournament, which will be jointly hosted by Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda.
Zanzibar Sports Department Commissioner Ameir Moh'd Makame said the stadium has been temporarily closed to allow for improvements to the pitch and ensure the playing surface reaches the required standard.
Following the closure, Tanzanian Mainland and Zanzibar clubs participating in the CAF Champions League (CAFCL) and CAF Confederation Cup (CAFCC) will have to find alternative venues for their preliminary-round matches, which are scheduled to begin in early September 2026.
New Amaan Complex and Azam Complex are currently the only stadiums approved by CAF to host matches in these competitions.
As a result, Yanga, Simba, Azam FC and Singida BS could all find themselves sharing the pitch at Azam Complex for their respective CAF matches.
