The Confederation of African Football (CAF) continues to strengthen the development of club football across Africa by ensuring that clubs eliminated in the preliminary rounds of the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup receive financial support, with each club eliminated at this stage set to receive US$100,000.
Among the clubs eliminated in the preliminary rounds are Ghanaian side Nations FC, who were knocked out of the CAF Confederation Cup after a 1-1 draw against Mali’s FC Diarra, and Medeama of Ghana, who exited the CAF Champions League after suffering a 4-1 aggregate defeat to TP Mazembe.
The decision marks a change from the previous system, under which clubs eliminated in the preliminary rounds did not receive financial payments from CAF. The initiative was introduced in 2024 with a payment of $50,000, before the amount was increased to $100,000 for each club eliminated in the preliminary rounds.
The move is part of CAF’s efforts to increase investment in club competitions and reduce the financial burden on clubs participating in international tournaments. Through the initiative, CAF aims to enhance competitiveness and help clubs from different African countries manage the costs associated with taking part in continental competitions.
