Liverpool have knocked Tottenham Hotspur out of the third round of the EFL Cup (Carabao Cup), adding further pressure on Roberto De Zerbi’s side after an unconvincing start to the season.
Tottenham have collected just two points from their opening four Premier League matches, leaving them 17th in the table. This comes despite Spurs spending around €366 million on new signings during the summer transfer window.
An early Carabao Cup exit represents another setback for Tottenham, who will now have to focus more heavily on the Premier League and the other competitions remaining this season.
Meanwhile, head coach Roberto De Zerbi has made his position on striker Richarlison clear, insisting that the Brazilian will not play under his management even if he is fully fit.
“Richarlison WILL NOT PLAY even if he is ready to play. Even in the Carabao Cup, no,” De Zerbi said.
The statement indicates that Richarlison is currently not part of De Zerbi’s plans, as Tottenham continue looking for ways to turn their fortunes around following a disappointing start to the campaign.
For Spurs, their Carabao Cup elimination, combined with just two points from four league matches, makes the upcoming fixtures increasingly important as they look to change the team’s situation.
The season is still long, but Tottenham will need quick answers.
