Liverpool and Netherlands defender Virgil van Dijk has revealed what convinced him to continue playing for the national team instead of retiring this summer.
Van Dijk said the decision was made within 10 seconds after coach Xavi spoke to him and reminded him: “You are Virgil van Dijk.”
According to Van Dijk, the conversation changed his perspective and made him decide to continue representing the Netherlands.
Following the conversation, Van Dijk told Xavi that he was ready to continue playing for the national team, putting aside his plans to retire this summer.
The decision means Van Dijk will remain part of the Netherlands squad going forward, where he is expected to continue contributing with his experience at international level.
