Whittaker wins a fight against Wallace, but is he the best in the world?

The boxing world witnessed an exciting clash between Ben Whittaker, nicknamed “The Surgeon,” and Conor Wallace, a boxer born in Newry, Northern Ireland, who has built his professional career in Australia. The fight took place on Saturday, October 3, at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham, with the winner earning the position of mandatory challenger for the IBF light heavyweight title.

From the opening rounds, Whittaker showed why he has been regarded as one of the most exciting talents of his generation. His hand speed, footwork, movement and ability to land shots while moving out of the line of attack gave him significant control of the fight. His showboating style and technical skills also made it difficult for Wallace to consistently reach his opponent. However, as the fight progressed, the picture began to change. Wallace found more opportunities and applied greater pressure in the later rounds. Whittaker, who had dominated much of the contest, began to look tired and was rocked by a heavy Wallace punch in the 10th round. What initially looked like a comfortable victory for Whittaker turned into a battle to survive until the final bell. The 12th round was the most dramatic of the fight. Wallace unleashed a series of heavy attacks that put Whittaker under serious pressure, with the British boxer appearing to use everything he had left to stay safe until the end. Although he appeared to go down several times in the final seconds, the judges did not rule any of the incidents as knockdowns. After 36 minutes, all three judges scored the fight in Whittaker’s favour, 117-111, 116-112 and 115-113.

The victory keeps Whittaker unbeaten as a professional and, more importantly, puts him in position to become the mandatory challenger for the IBF light heavyweight world title, currently held by Dmitry Bivol. “The Surgeon” is therefore one major step closer to a world-title fight that could determine whether he can truly establish himself at the top of the division.

But the big question remains: Is Ben Whittaker currently the best light heavyweight boxer in the world? The fight against Wallace confirmed that he possesses exceptional talent, unique skills and the ability to control an opponent for long periods. However, the way he faded in the later rounds and had to fight cautiously until the final bell also showed that there are still areas he needs to improve before he can fully prove that he deserves to be called the best in the world. For now, one thing is undeniable: Whittaker has opened the door to a major world-title fight. This victory was not simply about winning on the scorecards; it was a major test of his stamina, intelligence, technique and ability to handle pressure. Wallace showed tremendous heart in the later rounds, but Whittaker had built a big enough lead early on to survive the storm and secure the victory.

Perhaps this is where the real journey of “The Surgeon” begins. The question is no longer whether Ben Whittaker has the talent to become a world champion, the question is whether he can handle the very highest level of the division. A fight against Bivol or another world-class opponent will provide a much bigger answer.
