Angolan club Petro de Luanda have announced their separation from head coach João Pedro Sousa through a thank-you message shared on their social media platforms. The departure of the Portuguese coach comes during a difficult period for the club, following disappointing results in their continental campaign.
The decision follows a 2-0 defeat to Zimbabwe’s Scottland FC in the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League, a result that has left Petro de Luanda facing a difficult task as they seek to progress in the competition.
Sousa joined Petro de Luanda in May 2026, bringing experience gained from football in Europe and the Middle East. During his coaching career, he has managed several clubs, including Portugal’s Famalicão and Boavista, as well as Saudi Arabian side Al Raed.
His departure leaves Petro de Luanda with the responsibility of finding a new direction for their technical bench as the club continues competing in domestic and international competitions.
For a club with a rich history in Angolan football, results in CAF competitions carry significant weight in assessing the team’s performance.
Attention now turns to Petro de Luanda’s next move as the club looks for Sousa’s successor. However, the identity of the new coach and the timing of any announcement remain subject to confirmation by the club.
