Lessons from the Derby: Why Football Is Won Over 90 Minutes, Not 10

Who told you a football match is won in 10 minutes? Who said victory comes from a strong start alone? If there is one lesson from yesterday’s derby, it is that football is not decided by the opening minutes, but by consistency across the full 90.

At Major General Isamuhyo Stadium, we witnessed a perfect example of this truth. Within the first 10 minutes, Yanga were already trailing 2-0. To many, that looked like the beginning of collapse. But for Yanga players, it marked the start of a fightback.

What followed was a story of determination, discipline, and resilience. Gradually, they regained control, absorbed pressure, and eventually fought back to secure a 2-2 draw against their traditional rivals. This was not just a football match—it was a psychological lesson that the game is never over until the final whistle.

This derby was not without its off-field challenges. Match conditions became a topic of discussion, including Yanga’s decision not to use the dressing rooms and instead arrange an alternative space near the stadium after noticing unusual conditions. This highlights the level of pressure these fixtures carry—not just for players, but also in preparation and organization.

For Simba, the opening 10 minutes brought great hope to their fans. However, that optimism faded as Yanga grew stronger and more confident. From that point on, Simba supporters watched with increasing tension as their opponents gained momentum.

The second half was even more competitive. Yanga appeared more likely to snatch a win based on the chances they created, had they been more clinical.

As is often the case, refereeing decisions also sparked debate. Despite all officials being from Morocco, several questionable calls were made. One key moment involved defender Ismail Toure appearing to elbow striker Depu inside the penalty area—an incident that raised serious questions and could have changed the outcome.

Assistant referees also made controversial offside decisions, stopping several promising Yanga attacks. At times, local referees are heavily criticized due to external pressure, but in reality, the officiating in this match was not much different from what is often seen domestically.

In the end, the draw leaves contrasting emotions. For Yanga, it is a valuable result that keeps them at the top of the table with a five-point lead. For Simba, it is a frustrating outcome that weakens their title hopes.
