The Tanzanian football community has been plunged into deep mourning following the death of Yanga SC member and legendary supporter Haji Omari Ramadhani Mpili, popularly known as ‘Mzee Mpili,’ who passed away in the early hours of Monday, September 28, 2026.
Mzee Mpili died at Ikwiriri District Health Centre in Pwani Region, where he had been receiving treatment after battling illness for a long time.
A family spokesperson confirmed that the deceased is expected to be laid to rest this evening at 4:00 p.m. at the Ikwiriri Central Mosque Cemetery.
This is a major loss for Yanga, as the club’s leaders, members, supporters, stakeholders and residents of Ikwiriri prepare to bid farewell to the legendary figure as he is laid to rest.
How He Made His Mark on Tanzanian Football
Mzee Mpili will be remembered as one of the most influential football supporters in Tanzania over the past decade.
He rose to prominence through his distinctive catchphrases, fearless media appearances and fiery statements ahead of matches between traditional rivals Yanga and Simba SC in the Kariakoo Derby.
His famous declaration, "We have our people; Simba cannot beat us," became a chant and rallying cry that united Yanga supporters and gave them confidence whenever their team faced Simba.
At the time, Yanga were still struggling to find their footing, and the motivation from figures such as Mzee Mpili played a significant role in boosting the team’s morale and determination. Indeed, Yanga refused to be beaten by Simba even during a period when the club was going through difficult financial circumstances.
Yanga SC, through its official social media pages, expressed its deep sorrow and extended condolences to the family, relatives and football fans across the country following the loss of a man who added a unique touch to the entertainment and culture of Tanzanian football.
