Khalid Aucho Announces Retirement from International Football After 13 Years with Uganda

Former Uganda national team midfielder and captain Khalid Aucho has officially announced his retirement from international football after representing his country for 13 years, bringing to a close a journey marked by achievements and memorable moments in the history of The Cranes.

Aucho announced his decision in an official statement released on October 12, 2026, saying he was proud to have worn his country's jersey since making his debut for the national team on November 30, 2013.

During his time representing Uganda, the midfielder made 77 international appearances and went on to captain the team, forming part of a generation that represented the country at major African football tournaments.

Among the achievements he highlighted was being part of Uganda's journey to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals after a 38-year wait. He also represented his country in three editions of the tournament.

Aucho said his childhood dream was to hear the national anthem played as his country competed on the biggest football stages in the world. He described playing for Uganda and later leading the team as captain as one of the greatest honours of his life.

Reflecting on his journey, the midfielder explained that he grew up in humble circumstances, working at a slaughterhouse in Bugembe Market, but always dreamed of one day representing his country at the highest level of football.

In his statement, Aucho thanked the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), football administrators, the coaches who supported him throughout his career, and his teammates with whom he shared both successes and challenges.

He named several coaches who played a role in his journey, including Milutin “Micho” Sredojević, Sébastien Desabre, Johnathan McKinstry and Paul Put. He also paid special tribute to the late Fred Kajoba, saying his contribution and belief in him had a significant impact on his life.

Aucho also thanked Uganda's fans for their support, noting that their encouragement at Namboole Stadium and across the country continued to motivate the national team players whenever they faced challenges.

Although his playing career with the national team has come to an end, Aucho said his commitment to supporting the development of Ugandan football remains unchanged. He added that it is now time for a new generation to step forward, wear the national jersey and write their own history.

“I leave the national team with a heart full of gratitude, immense pride and immeasurable love for my country,” Aucho said in his statement.
