Yanga Must Turn New Amaan into a Fortress to Avoid Another CAF Champions League Group-Stage Exit

After two consecutive seasons of failing to progress beyond the CAF Champions League group stage, Yanga SC now face another demanding continental campaign.

This time, the Wananchi must be ruthless on home soil and collect as many points as possible to avoid repeating the mistakes that cost them in previous seasons.

The 2023/24 season remains an important chapter in Yanga's history in the competition. They reached the quarter-finals, where they faced Mamelodi Sundowns. Their campaign came to an end on penalties after the tie finished 0-0 on aggregate.

However, since that achievement, things have not gone as expected.

TWO SEASONS, EIGHT POINTS AND A REPEATED HISTORY

The 2024/25 season was the first time Yanga failed to progress after their impressive campaign the previous year. Drawn in Group D alongside Al Hilal, MC Alger and TP Mazembe, Yanga finished third with eight points, missing out on a quarter-final place.

What made the disappointment even greater was that the same story unfolded again in the following 2025/26 season.

On that occasion, Yanga were drawn in Group B alongside Al Ahly, AS FAR and JS Kabylie. Despite demonstrating their ability to compete and securing important victories, the Wananchi once again finished with eight points and failed to advance.

Their 3-0 victory over JS Kabylie in the final match was not enough. A goalless draw between Al Ahly and AS FAR meant Yanga missed out on progression, despite ending their campaign with eight points.

GROUP B: ANOTHER CHALLENGE AGAINST NORTH AFRICAN GIANTS

This season, Yanga have once again found themselves in a group featuring strong opposition from North Africa. This time, they will face Zamalek, MC Alger and Club Africain.

These clubs have rich histories in African football and extensive experience competing under intense pressure. For Yanga, the challenge will not simply be facing teams with big reputations, but also finding ways to collect points in matches that could be decided by the smallest details.

One important factor to consider is that the dynamics of this group closely resemble those of last season. The opponents have changed, but the challenge of facing North African teams remains.

Yanga must therefore approach the competition with preparations that take into account tactical differences, defensive discipline and the ability to make the most of scoring opportunities. Most importantly, they need to collect all nine points from their home matches.

NEW AMAAN: HOME MUST BECOME A NINE-POINT FORTRESS

Yanga's decision to continue using New Amaan Complex in Zanzibar for their home matches makes the stadium a crucial part of their strategy.

With three home fixtures in the group stage, the target should be to collect all nine available points.

Last season, Yanga dropped two points at home after drawing 1-1 with Al Ahly. That result was among the setbacks that prevented the team from reaching the points total required to progress.

Therefore, there is little room for a repeat of that situation this time around.

Yanga must approach their home matches with a winning mentality while maintaining defensive discipline.

In groups of this nature, home matches can provide the foundation for a successful journey to the quarter-finals.

THE SECOND STRATEGY: COLLECTING POINTS AWAY FROM HOME

This is where Yanga's campaign could take a different direction.

As was the case last season, the Wananchi will face difficult conditions when playing away from home. Long journeys, hostile opposition supporters and the pressure of playing in North African stadiums are all factors that require special preparation.

Yanga cannot rely solely on collecting nine points at home. They also need positive results away from home, even if that means settling for draws in some matches.

The priority should be to avoid defeat, despite the difficult conditions they will encounter. Tunisia, Algeria and Egypt are known for passionate supporters who create intense atmospheres whenever their teams play on home soil.
