Tanzanian football never ceases to deliver surprises, and this time, another major development has sent shockwaves through the game. Former Simba SC and Raja Casablanca head coach Fadlu Davids, a South African national, is reportedly set to return to Tanzania.
However, this time he will not be heading to Msimbazi. His new home is expected to be Jangwani, where he will take over from Manqoba Mngqithi at Yanga.
Yanga's decision to appoint the coach has surprised many, particularly given the fierce rivalry between the two clubs, Yanga and Simba.
Fadlu enjoyed a successful spell with Simba, helping the team reach the CAF Confederation Cup final during his first season in charge.
After just one season, he moved to Raja Casablanca, where he had previously served as an assistant coach before being appointed by Simba.
At Raja Casablanca, Fadlu was unable to see out the season and eventually parted ways with the club after the Moroccan giants lost their chance to win the league title.
So, what exactly should Yanga expect from Fadlu Davids?
1. A Revolution in Attractive Football and Youth Development
During his time at Simba SC in the 2024/25 season, Fadlu Davids earned considerable praise for his philosophy of attractive, short-passing football, supported by a solid defensive structure and quick attacking play. One of his biggest strengths is his willingness to use and trust young players. At Yanga, fans can expect entertaining football built on strong discipline, with gifted players such as Stephane Aziz Ki potentially benefiting from tactical systems that give them greater freedom to express their abilities.
2. Restoring Domestic Dominance (NBC Premier League)
Fadlu takes over a Yanga side under considerable pressure to deliver results following its separation from Mngqithi. At present, Simba SC, under coach Steve Barker, are leading the league and sit five points ahead of Yanga. Fadlu's first and most immediate task will be to close that gap and ensure Yanga defend their league title.
Any further slip-ups could put him under intense pressure from the 'Wananchi', who are accustomed to a winning run.
3. A Major International Test (CAF Champions League)
One of Fadlu Davids' biggest achievements during his time in Tanzania was guiding Simba SC to the 2024/25 CAF Confederation Cup final, where they lost to RS Berkane. That international experience is one of the factors that reportedly attracted Yanga to him.
However, this time he faces a bigger challenge: the CAF Champions League (CAFCL). Yanga have been drawn into a difficult group featuring Zamalek of Egypt, MC Alger of Algeria and Club Africain of Tunisia. Fans will expect Fadlu to use his tactical approach to guide Yanga through the group stage and into the quarter-finals or semi-finals, a challenge that has proved difficult for many coaches who have previously worked at Jangwani.
4. Pressure and Kariakoo Derby Redemption
Moving from one side of Kariakoo to the other is a particularly bold step. During his time at Simba, Fadlu failed to win any derby match against Yanga and did not lift a trophy.
Now he returns on the opposite side. Simba fans will want to prove that the club was right to part ways with him, while Fadlu will be looking to use Yanga's squad quality to secure his first derby victory in Tanzania.
Matches between Fadlu Davids' Yanga and Steve Barker's Simba are likely to be fiercely contested.
Fadlu Davids' arrival at Yanga is a double-edged sword. On one hand, the club would be bringing in a highly experienced coach who understands the Tanzanian football environment and its pressures, and who is hungry for success.
On the other hand, he will face supporters with little patience and club officials who demand immediate results. Will he deliver?
