The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has officially announced the suspension of Benfica attacking midfielder Gianluca Prestianni following an incident that occurred during the first leg against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League.
According to UEFA’s official statement, the suspension is provisional while a full investigation continues into allegations of inappropriate conduct reportedly directed at Real Madrid forward, Vini Jr.
The governing body stated that the measure aims to protect the integrity of the game and ensure safety and calm ahead of the return leg.
As a result of the decision, Prestianni will not be part of Benfica’s squad for the second leg at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid. His absence is considered a significant blow for the Portuguese side, given the importance of the fixture in determining progression in Europe’s premier club competition.
Reports indicate the incident occurred toward the end of a highly competitive and emotionally charged first-leg encounter. UEFA reiterated its strict stance against racism and any conduct that goes against the values of football.
Benfica have reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the decision and are reviewing legal options to determine whether an appeal is possible, although time remains limited before the return leg.
