Amid growing speculation over the future of Yanga head coach Pedro Goncalves, it is clear that the club needs to make good use of the FIFA break to strengthen and return even more solid.
Despite remaining at the top of the league standings, the recent performances of the national champions have raised concerns among fans, who believe that without changes, defending their title this season may prove challenging.
Beyond injuries and a congested schedule, complaints started early during the team’s participation in continental competitions.
After 16 league matches, Yanga’s points tally lags behind last season’s performance. They have accumulated 38 points, four fewer than they had at a similar stage last season.
Last season, Yanga won the Premier League title with 82 points from 30 matches, winning 27, drawing one, and losing two. They scored 83 goals, the highest in the league, while conceding only 10, the fewest of any team.
So far this season, Yanga have dropped 10 points in 16 matches, compared to just eight points dropped in 30 matches last season.
The team has drawn five times against Mbeya City, Simba, TRA United, Azam, and Mtibwa Sugar, causing a loss of points. Last season, they drew only once against JKT Tanzania and lost two matches against Azam and Tabora United (TRA).
Yanga’s management is expected to meet to review the team’s performance, and changes on the technical bench would not come as a surprise.
